NYC and ME

NYC and ME

New York City was the first place I visited just a month after I settled in the US in January 2015. I had to go back to the city I first visited when I was 25 years old and that I loved so much. Fast forward to 7 years later and I was just as excited as the first time. I love NYC for its energy, its creativity, its architecture and its people. I used to go to New York every year since living in the US, but the pandemic and my wedding’s planning changed that trend. After 4 years I’m finally back in the city and I couldn’t be more excited! You will find my favorite things to do and addresses below.

My City Guide C’est Ici! (It’s here)

Before I start sharing my recommendations and favorite addresses, I have to say that everyone should experience New York during the Holiday season at least once in their life. New York truly has the best Christmas decorations. You have to see the gigantic beautiful Christmas tree lit up at the Rockefeller Plaza overlooking the ice rink. It’s just magic! I took my family there years ago during the Holidays and we all had sparkles in our eyes. Another great time to visit New York is during Fall and Spring. But Fall is my favorite season. You can witness the trees transforming into their Fall foliage in Central Park.

THINGS TO DO:

  • My absolute favorite thing to do when in New York is to walk in Central Park. I love to go in the morning. I grab a coffee and go there first to enjoy the serene scenery the park offers.

  • Another ritual of mine is to stop by at Times Square to take in all the energy. This is one of the most famous intersections in the world for its large signs and huge TV screens illuminated day and night. This is also where they drop the ball every year on December 31 to announce the New Year.

  • I recommend seeing the NYC skyline from one of the observation decks at least once to enjoy breathtaking views. My favorite observatory is the one at the Rockefeller Center: Top of the Rock. You can admire the Empire State Building front row from there. Another observation deck I will try next time is the Edge at Hudson Yards. This is the new tallest observatory deck suspended mid air at 1,100 feet up (340m).

  • Another iconic place I love is the Rockefeller Plaza especially during the holiday season. This is where they install the famous gorgeous Christmas tree and ice ring. Make sure to go when the tree is lit up, which happened end of November.

  • Another classic during the Holiday season in New York is to go see the annual Christmas Spectacular show at the Radio City Music Hall starring The Rockettes. This is the famous dance company that has performed there since the opening of the theater in 1932! Even if you’re not in NYC during the Holidays, I recommend visiting this theater, which is iconic in the arts and culture scene of the city. Not only does it have interesting Art Deco architecture but it’s also the largest indoor theater in the world with 6,000 seats!

  • You cannot go to New York without admiring the magnificent architecture of Grand Central Terminal. This is the largest train station in the world and in my opinion it’s the most beautiful one. You will find plenty of restaurants and shops inside of the station. I like to go for brunch at Pershing Square, a Bistro located directly across Grand Central main entrance on 42nd Street under the arch.

  • Another popular walk is to go to the High Line in Chelsea. It’s a cool concept of an elevated concrete walkway above the streets. You can enjoy lots of greenery in its park grounds, art installations and great views of the city’s skyline. The newest public park Little Island on the Hudson River at Pier 55 is near by too. When in the area go to Hudson Yards, this is where the tallest observation deck the Edge is located and the Vessel too, another NYC landmark. You will find plenty of restaurants inside the shopping mall. The Mediterranean street-food concept Miznon has locations in Hudson Yards and Chelsea Market, making it the perfect lunch break when in the area.

  • If it’s your first time in New York you should definitely take the ferry to go see the Statue of Liberty. Ferries depart from the Battery in lower Manhattan.

  • Another landmark of New York is the famous Brooklyn Bridge. I like to go to Dumbo, a neighborhood in Brooklyn for amazing views on the bridge. You can go to Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 1, opposite to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory and on the other side of the bridge where Jane’s Carousel is. If you want to have a fancier experience while enjoying breathtaking views of the bridge, I recommend having a drink at Harriet’s the rooftop bar and restaurant of 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. Another great place to check out is the oyster bar Pilot. It’s on a vintage boat docked at Pier 6. You will have a unique experience for sure! Another famous thing to do, when in Dumbo is to have your picture taken on Washington Street (intersection of Water Street) with the Manhattan Bridge in the background between two red-brick warehouses.

  • My favorite neighborhoods to visit in NYC are East Village, Soho, West Village and Greenwich Village. They offer plenty of restaurants, shopping areas and beautiful houses to look at! If you’re in West Village go check out the house of Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and City at 66 Perry Street!
